J. Alan Smith

Al Smith has been litigating cases throughout Ohio for more than three decades, which means he has spent a significant portion of his life either in a courtroom, preparing for a courtroom, or thinking about what should happen in a courtroom. He joined Cory Meredith in 2000 after spending eleven years with another prominent Northwest Ohio law firm, and has been advocating for clients ever since.

A graduate of Case Western Reserve University, Al earned both his undergraduate and law degrees there. Over the course of his career, Al has handled an impressive number of jury trials in state and federal court, and with very few exceptions, the verdicts favored his clients. In Al’s opinion, right to a jury trial makes the American system of justice superior to all alternatives.

Al’s practice focuses on civil litigation, insurance defense, insurance coverage disputes, employment matters, construction litigation, commercial litigation, municipal law, zoning issues, workers’ compensation claims, and serious personal injury and wrongful death cases.

After more than 35 years of practice, Al remains a tireless advocate, a seasoned trial lawyer, and a strong believer in the jury system. He brings experience, preparation, and courtroom confidence to every case – along with enough trial stories to fill several books, though he probably won’t read them.
